FAQs

General Questions:

What exactly is an artificial eye?

An artificial eye, or ocular prosthesis, is a custom-made shell designed to fit over an orbital implant or into the space left after the natural eye has been removed (enucleation or evisceration). It is painted and sculpted to match the healthy eye in colour, shape, and lustre.

Is an artificial eye comfortable to wear?

Yes. A properly fitted and polished prosthesis should be very comfortable. We use clinical precision during the impression and fitting process to ensure the custom fit minimizes friction and maximizes comfort.

Can the artificial eye see?

No. An ocular prosthesis is a cosmetic device and does not restore vision. Its primary purpose is to restore a natural appearance and maintain the shape of the eyelids and face.

How long does an artificial eye last?

With proper care, an artificial eye can last for many years. However, due to changes in the eye socket tissues (orbital recession) and normal wear and tear on the material, replacement is typically recommended every 5 to 7 years for adults. Children usually require more frequent replacements as their face grows.

The Fitting Process

How long does the whole fitting process take?

The fitting process usually involves 2 to 4 appointments and typically spans 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the complexity of your socket and our current schedule. This includes the initial impression, shaping, painting, and final delivery.

Do I need surgery before I can get an artificial eye?

In most cases, yes. The socket needs to be stable and healed following the removal of the eye (enucleation or evisceration) or, in some cases, the insertion of an orbital implant. We work closely with your ophthalmologist or ocular surgeon.

Is the fitting process painful?

No. The process involves taking a gentle impression of the eye socket using dental-grade materials, followed by painting and adjusting the prosthesis. These steps are non-surgical and non-invasive.

Care and Maintenance

How often should I clean my artificial eye?

We generally recommend having the prosthesis professionally cleaned and polished by our clinician every 6 months. Daily cleaning is usually not necessary and can even be harmful. We will provide detailed instructions specific to your needs.

How often do I need to remove the artificial eye?

Most patients wear their prosthesis continuously and only remove it for professional cleaning. However, removal frequency depends entirely on the individual and the socket's unique condition. We will advise you on the best schedule.

What should I use to clean the prosthesis?

Never use abrasive materials, alcohol, or harsh household cleaners. If you need to rinse it at home, use clean, warm water and follow the specific instructions provided by our clinic.
